Personality: At first, Sakuma can seem very cold. He acts aloof and distant, especially to those he doesn't know. This combined with his elitist nature makes others see him as cruel. He's arrogant, judgmental and quick to criticize of those who he doesn't think stand up to his standards. Although his treatment of others gets better as the series progresses, Sakuma still isn't averse to showing his dislike for someone in the open for example, telling Fudou Akio that he doesn’t trust him to his face. It's not easy to sway his opinions on something once he has decided so Sakuma can be quite stubborn. This doesn't just apply to his perception of certain people but to ideals as well. The only way to change his mind is to show him through something drastic.

Though it may be hard to see, Sakuma is kind and caring. It’s just a side that he rarely shows. If someone is able to get past his walls, Sakuma can be very loyal. He is extremely supportive of his friends and he’s willing to stand behind them no matter what. He holds a special bond with the other members of Teikoku Academy’s soccer team. It’s been said that they all have immense trust for each other and are so confident in each other’s skill that they instinctively know where the other players are without having to see with their eyes. Of his teammates, Sakuma is particularly close with Genda Koujirou and Kidou Yuuto. Kidou is the captain of the team and it is obvious that Sakuma admires him greatly. He even went against their coach to side with Kidou. Kidou is someone that Sakuma cares for greatly, not just as a leader but as his friend. He displays on multiple occasions that he is willing to put Kidou’s happiness first such as telling Kidou he should stay with Raimon or willingly searching for Kageyama so that he can confront him first instead of letting Kidou because he knows how upset Kidou will be.

There was a point where he felt overshadowed by Kidou. In the match with Zeus, the Teikoku team was savagely beaten and all the members were put into the hospital. Kidou joined Raimon instead so he could avenge his teammates therefore leaving them behind. Sakuma was obviously bitter about this because he allowed Fudou to convince him to go back to Kageyama, the previous coach for Teikoku. It was during this time that Sakuma’s want for power is shown. He himself stated that he will stop at nothing until he is strong. He even used a forbidden technique. All of this was to prove himself to Kidou.

Eventually, Kidou does manage to convince him that resorting to such methods was not the right way. Sakuma still strives to become strong but he has realized that he isn’t Kidou and therefore he shouldn’t compare himself to him. He has come to terms with who he is, who he won’t be and has learned to let Kidou go.

When it’s not his own situation, Sakuma can be pretty observant and insightful. He was able to see through Kidou’s problem of not being able to get a hissatsu technique to work as well as deduct that Kidou felt guilty about leaving Teikoku.

He is very competitive and sometimes Sakuma can get a little obsessive over a goal and there are times where he will act before thinking, even if his action of choice will be considered the bad one in the long one. He can be blinded in his want to achieve something so much so that he can’t (or won’t) see the negatives to it such as when he is part of Shin Teikoku.
Abilities: Because he is an athlete who pretty much dedicated his entire life to soccer, Sakuma has incredible strength and stamina. He is also a very fast runner. He is an extremely high ranking soccer player, having come from a prestigious school known for its soccer champions as well as playing a forward on the team. His kick is strong enough to injure people.

Soccer players where he comes from are able to use skills called hissatsu techniques and Sakuma is no different. Since Sakuma is a forward, most of his hissatsu are shoots. Some of them a solo techniques while others are used as a combo with his teammates.
